How to choose the right e-bike: complete guide

How to choose the right e-bike: complete guide

Choosing an e-bike is about more than price. Range, motor type and battery decide how much you will enjoy the bike day to day. Here are the key factors, explained simply.

Mid-drive or hub motor?

Mid-drive motors (Bosch, Yamaha, Shimano) sit at the pedals and give a natural, well-balanced ride – best for hills and heavy loads. Hub motors sit in the wheel, are often cheaper and feel like a push from behind. For trails and commuting we usually recommend a mid-drive, which you will find on the Cube Stereo Hybrid and Gazelle Ultimate.

Range and battery

Range depends on battery capacity (Wh), terrain, weight and ride mode. For daily commuting 400–500 Wh goes a long way; for long rides or trails you will want 625 Wh or more. A quality battery typically lasts 5–7 years.

Motor power (Nm)

Torque is measured in Nm. Around 50 Nm is fine for flat city riding, while 60–85 Nm is recommended for hilly terrain or lively acceleration – as on a full-suspension e-mountain bike.

Which type suits you?

For the city: a light electric city bike or folding bike. For the family: an electric cargo bike. For trails: an e-mountain bike. For off-road fun: an electric dirt bike.

Legality in Denmark

Remember: e-bikes are road-legal at max. 250 W and 25 km/h. If you want more speed, look at a speed pedelec (with registration) or an off-road electric dirt bike. Read more about the rules here.
