Electric dirt bikes on public roads in Denmark: rules and licences

· Sources checked: 12 October 2026

Short answer: Off-road electric dirt bikes are not road-legal in Denmark without registration and type approval. On public roads, vehicles designed for up to 45 km/h need an AM licence; faster or more powerful ones need a motorcycle licence.

We could not confirm these limits on an official page. Ask the authority.

What the sources say

  • A knallert is a two- or three-wheeled vehicle with an electric motor and a design top speed of at most 45 km/h. A large knallert is over 30 km/h, a small one at most 30 km/h (Danish Ministry of Justice answer to Parliament, earlier statute text).
  • The age limit for AM (large knallert) is 18 in the texts we read; proposals for 16 were tabled but we could not confirm a change. Holders of a licence from another EU/EEA country may ride AM from 16.

EU classification (summary): L1e-B is a two-wheel moped up to 45 km/h and 4 kW; L3e is motorcycles, split into A1 (125 cm³, 11 kW, 0.1 kW/kg), A2 (35 kW, 0.2 kW/kg) and A3 (the rest). Check Annex I of Regulation 168/2013.

Questions and answers

No. Our off-road models are sold for private land and closed tracks and are not road-legal on public roads without registration and homologation. For public roads you need an EU type-approved L1e or L3e model with CoC, registration and insurance.

AM: Two- and three-wheel vehicles with a design speed up to 45 km/h – minimum age 18; AM-S: Small moped (30 km/h) – minimum age 15. We could not confirm these limits on an official page. Ask the authority.

With Trafikstyrelsen (https://www.trafikstyrelsen.dk). Also ask the seller for the CoC (type approval) and check registration and insurance before riding on a public road.
