Electric commuter bikes: 6 models compared, real prices and the motor rating that matters

By Kobolt Bikes · ·

Electric commuter bikes cost from €1,103 to €3,496 in the six models compared here, and the right one depends on your distance, your hills, how much bike you can carry and what motor rating you want, not on the biggest watt figure. We compare six commuter e-bikes from our catalogue with prices, motor, torque, battery and weight from the makers and dealers we cite, and we separate the 250 W models from the stronger ones, because that decides how they are treated on the road.

Three electric commuter bikes: Specialized Turbo Vado SL 4.0, Trek FX+ 2 and Trek Allant+ 7

Quick picks: six commuter e-bikes side by side

Start with the table. Prices are our current catalogue prices in euro including delivery to Denmark. Motor, torque, battery and weight are the figures published by the makers or by dealers; where a figure is missing we left it out rather than guess. Click a model for the full product page.

Aventon Pace 500.3€1,195500 W rear hub–614 Wh (48 V / 12.8 Ah)23.6 kg

Read the table in two groups. The first four bikes list motors rated at or below 250 W: the Specialized Turbo Vado SL 4.0 (240 W peak), the Trek FX+ 2 (250 W), the Trek Allant+ 7 (Bosch, 250 W) and the Serial 1 Rush/Cty (Brose, 250 W). The last two, the Aventon Soltera.2 (350 W) and the Aventon Pace 500.3 (500 W), list stronger motors. Weight also splits the table: the Vado SL is a claimed 14.9 kg, while the Serial 1 with its 706 Wh battery is 26.8 kg.

Electric commuter bikes: what to look for

A commuter e-bike is built for daily use: it usually has a comfortable upright position, mudguards, a rack or the mounts for one, lights, and a drivetrain that tolerates rain and dirt. Many come as a step-through or a low-step frame, which is easier to mount in work clothes. The motor assists while you pedal, so a commute that is hilly, windy or just too long on an ordinary bike becomes a ride you arrive from without needing a shower.

Two motor layouts dominate. A mid-drive motor sits at the cranks and delivers power through the chain, which feels natural and climbs well; the Bosch, Brose and Specialized systems in our table are mid-drive. A rear hub motor is in the wheel, is simpler and cheaper, and is used by the Trek FX+ 2 and the Aventon models. Neither is wrong: mid-drive suits hills and heavier loads, hub motors suit flat, urban routes and lower budgets.

The 250 W check for a commuter e-bike

Under EU Regulation (EU) No 168/2013, pedal cycles with pedal assistance and an auxiliary motor of up to 250 W continuous rated power, whose assistance is cut off before 25 km/h, are outside the motor-vehicle L-categories (Article 2). That is why an ordinary e-bike is treated as a bicycle. Our own guidance says the same: an e-bike is road-legal at up to 250 W and 25 km/h assistance.

In our table the Specialized Turbo Vado SL 4.0, Trek FX+ 2, Trek Allant+ 7 and Serial 1 Rush/Cty are listed with motors at or below 250 W. The Aventon Soltera.2 lists 350 W and the Aventon Pace 500.3 lists 500 W, so those two are above the limit of the pedal-cycle exemption and you cannot assume they are ordinary bicycles on public roads. If you want to commute on public roads, choose a 250 W model, or ask us before you buy whether the stronger model is supplied or configured to the EU specification and what its road status is in your country. Speed pedelecs, which assist up to 45 km/h, are a different class again and need registration.

Battery, range and your commute

Battery capacity (Wh) decides how far you go. Our table runs from 250 Wh (Trek FX+ 2) and 320 Wh (Specialized Vado SL) to 500 Wh (Trek Allant+ 7) and 706 Wh (Serial 1 Rush/Cty). Real range depends on assistance level, rider weight, terrain, wind, tyre pressure and temperature, so treat any published range as a best case and compare watt-hours instead.

To choose a size, work out your round trip, then add margin for headwinds, hills and winter, when batteries deliver less. A short city commute is well served by a 250 to 360 Wh battery and a light bike, while a long commute or a heavier rider benefits from 500 Wh or more. Ask whether the battery is removable for charging at your desk, how long a full charge takes and what the battery warranty covers.

Which commuter e-bike for which rider

Light and fast to live with

The Specialized Turbo Vado SL 4.0 (€3,220, 240 W peak, 35 Nm, 320 Wh, a claimed 14.9 kg) is the light option. It rides close to a normal bike, is easy to carry up stairs and suits flat to rolling commutes. The Trek FX+ 2 (€2,576, 250 W, 40 Nm, 250 Wh, 18.2 kg) is a lighter, simpler fitness-style bike for shorter rides.

Hills and longer commutes

The Trek Allant+ 7 (€3,220, Bosch 250 W, 75 Nm, 500 Wh, 21.5 kg) and the Serial 1 Rush/Cty (€3,496, Brose 250 W, 90 Nm, 706 Wh, 26.8 kg) have the torque and battery for hills and longer distances. The Serial 1 is the strongest climber and the heaviest of the four.

Lower price, stronger motor

The Aventon Soltera.2 (€1,103, 350 W, 360 Wh, 18.6 kg) and the Aventon Pace 500.3 (€1,195, 500 W, 614 Wh, 23.6 kg) are the lowest-priced here. They suit riders on a budget who ride on private paths or confirm the road status first, because their motor ratings are above 250 W.

Fit, comfort and everyday equipment

Fit matters more than any spec. Choose the frame size by your height and the maker's size chart, and prefer a step-through frame if you often stop and start. Check that the bike has mudguards and mounting points for a rack, because a commute is mostly about carrying a bag and staying dry. Disc brakes, reliable lights and puncture-resistant tyres are worth more than extra watts.

Think about security and storage. Electric bikes are valuable, so budget for a strong lock and, if you can, indoor storage. A removable battery is useful for charging indoors and for protecting the battery from extreme cold or heat. Check the national rules for lights and reflectors where you ride, and add them if the bike is supplied without.

Buying checklist and common mistakes

  1. Check the motor rating first. For public roads, choose a 250 W / 25 km/h model or get the specification in writing.
  2. Match battery to your commute. Work out the round trip and add margin for hills, wind and winter.
  3. Choose mid-drive for hills. A hub motor suits flat urban routes and lower budgets.
  4. Weigh the bike against your stairs. A claimed 14.9 kg and 26.8 kg feel very different on a flight of steps.
  5. Check mudguards, rack mounts and lights. They matter more than extra power.
  6. Get the right frame size. A poor fit spoils the ride more than any spec.
  7. Budget for security. A strong lock and safe storage are part of the price.
