Trek electric mountain bikes compared: Rail and Powerfly prices, batteries and what the money buys

By Kobolt Bikes · ·

Mountain biker rides downhill on a wooded trail – photo for the Trek electric mountain bikes guide to Rail and Powerfly

Trek electric mountain bikes in our catalogue run from €4,140 to €10,580, and the surprise is that all five models we stock use the same motor: the Bosch Performance Line CX with 85 N·m of torque. So the price gap between them is not about power. It buys a carbon frame, a bigger battery and better components. This guide compares the Trek Rail and Powerfly models we stock with euro prices from our catalogue and the specifications on our product pages, and shows what each extra euro actually gets you.

Quick picks: the Trek Rail and Powerfly range side by side

Start with the table. Prices are our current catalogue prices in euro including delivery to Denmark. Motor is the drive unit named on the product page, torque is the published figure, battery is capacity in watt-hours, weight is the published weight and travel is front and rear suspension travel in millimetres. A dash means we found no reliable figure for that bike and left it out instead of guessing. Click a model to open its product page.

Trek Rail 7€5,060Bosch Performance Line CX85625 Wh24.1 kg160 / 150
Trek Powerfly FS 9.9€5,980Bosch Performance Line CX85–––

Trek Rail 9.9 XTR€10,580Bosch Performance Line CX85––160 / 150

Three things stand out. First, every bike here has the same Bosch Performance Line CX motor with 85 N·m. Second, the Trek Powerfly FS 7 at €4,140 is the cheapest way into the range. Third, every model is a 250 W, 25 km/h pedelec in its EU configuration, so each is treated as a bicycle in most EU countries.

Trek electric mountain bikes: how Rail and Powerfly differ

Rail is the Trek electric mountain bike our pages describe for trail and enduro riding, with 160 mm of front and 150 mm of rear travel on the models we stock. Powerfly is Trek's other electric mountain bike family in our catalogue. Our product pages list suspension travel only for the Rail, so we do not compare travel on the Powerfly models and leave dashes instead of guessing.

What we can compare is what is published: frame material, battery and price. Rail 7 and Powerfly FS 7 have aluminium frames. The Powerfly FS 9.9, Rail 9.8 XT and Rail 9.9 XTR have carbon frames. For the wider market, our electric mountain bike buying guide and the Specialized Levo and Kenevo comparison cover the other brands.

Trek Rail 7: the aluminium trail bike

The Trek Rail 7 costs €5,060 and lists a Bosch Performance Line CX mid-drive with 85 N·m of torque, a 625 Wh battery, a weight of 24.1 kg, an aluminium frame, 29-inch wheels and 160 / 150 mm of full-suspension travel. It is the only Trek here with a published weight.

It is the sensible entry to the Rail: the same motor as the dearer models, a mid-size battery and an aluminium frame that keeps the price down. If you want to ride hard on technical trails and do not need carbon, this is the Rail to look at first.

Trek Rail 9.8 XT and 9.9 XTR: the carbon Rails

The Trek Rail 9.8 XT costs €7,820 and lists the same Bosch CX motor and 85 N·m, a larger 750 Wh battery, a carbon frame and 160 / 150 mm of travel. The jump from the Rail 7 is €2,760 for 125 Wh more battery, which is 20 percent, plus the carbon frame and the higher-spec parts.

The Trek Rail 9.9 XTR costs €10,580, another €2,760 on top, and lists the same motor and travel with a carbon frame. We do not publish a battery size or weight for it, so ask us for the exact specification of the version we deliver. The motor and torque are identical across all three Rails, so the extra money goes to components and finish, not to power.

Trek Powerfly FS 7 and FS 9.9: the other family

The Trek Powerfly FS 7 costs €4,140 and lists the Bosch Performance Line CX mid-drive with 85 N·m and an aluminium frame. The Trek Powerfly FS 9.9 costs €5,980 and lists the same motor with a carbon frame. The gap between them is €1,840 for the step from aluminium to carbon and the higher-spec parts.

We do not publish battery, weight or travel for the Powerfly models, because we could not source reliable figures, so ask us before you order if those numbers matter to you. Searches for names like Powerfly 5 or Powerfly 6 point to other model years and generations; the Powerfly bikes in our catalogue are the FS 7 and FS 9.9 listed here, and we confirm the exact version and model year before you order.

What the extra money buys: the price ladder

Because the motor never changes, the ladder is simple. The Powerfly FS 7 is the entry at €4,140. The Rail 7 costs €920 more than the Powerfly FS 7. The Powerfly FS 9.9 costs €1,840 more than the FS 7 for a carbon frame. The Rail 9.8 XT costs €2,760 more than the Rail 7 for carbon and 125 Wh of battery. The Rail 9.9 XTR adds another €2,760.

Per watt-hour of battery, where we publish both numbers, the Rail 7 comes out at about €8.10 per Wh (€5,060 for 625 Wh) and the Rail 9.8 XT at about €10.43 per Wh (€7,820 for 750 Wh). So the carbon Rail does not give you more battery per euro; it gives you a carbon frame and higher-spec parts. Choose it for those reasons, not for range.

EU road status: a 250 W, 25 km/h pedelec

In its EU configuration each Trek here has a 250 W motor with assist up to 25 km/h, which is how our product pages describe them: treated as a bicycle in most EU countries. Under Regulation (EU) No 168/2013, pedal cycles with pedal assistance, a continuous rated power of 0.25 kW or less and assist cutting off at 25 km/h are outside the scope of the L-category vehicle rules, which is why a normal e-bike does not need registration. National rules still differ on helmets, minimum age and where you may ride.

For the rules in your country, see our guides for Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Spain and Finland.

Buying checklist and common mistakes

  1. Remember the motor is the same. Do not pay more for power; pay for frame, battery and parts.
  2. Do the battery arithmetic. Check capacity where it is published and ask for the rest.
  3. Ask for the missing figures. Weight, battery and travel are not published for every model here.
  4. Check the model year. Specifications vary by model year and market, and we confirm the exact version before you order.
  5. Beware of too-good prices. Buy from a seller with a registered business and a guarantee.
  6. Check parts and service. Suspension and brake pads wear.
  7. Budget for protective gear. A helmet and protection are not optional.
